Book Dimensions

The Book Dimensions define the physical space available within a book for creating folded paper artwork within the pages. These settings ensure that your pattern fits correctly within the book’s pages and height.

Availability

The Book Dimensions are available when the Book Pattern Type is selected.

How It Works

On the main screen, the Book Dimensions are displayed with an Edit button.

Clicking the Edit button opens a modal window where you can:

  • Select the Unit Type (Metric or Imperial).
  • Select the Precision setting.
  • Select the Numbering Style (Leaf or Page).
  • Change the Leaf / Page Count.
  • Change the Book Height.
  • Change the Border Height.

Unit Type lets you choose between Metric (mm, cm) or Imperial (inches). Changing the unit type automatically updates the canvas dimensions to match your preferred system.

Precision defines the minimum spacing between folds. The available precision options depend on the selected Unit Type:

  • Metric Options: 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 2 mm (smaller values allow finer detail).
  • Imperial Options: ¹⁄₃₂ in, ¹⁄₁₆ in, ¹⁄₈ in (smaller values allow finer detail).

Changing the precision updates the After Canvas pattern image in real time.

Numbering Style determines whether the final pattern uses leaf numbers or page numbers for referencing. This directly affects how the instructions are presented in the generated pattern.

Number of Leaves/Pages refers to the total number of leaves or pages in the book. The count depends on the Numbering Style:

  • Leaf – Counts physical sheets (each with two pages).
  • Page – Counts each side separately (double the leaf count).

Book Height refers to the vertical height of the book’s pages (not the cover). This determines the maximum height available for the design.

Border Height refers to the blank space at the top and bottom of the book that remains unmodified. This keeps the design centred and maintains the book’s structure.

Why It’s Useful

  • Ensures your design fits perfectly within the chosen book.
  • Lets you balance simplicity versus detail through precision.
  • Keeps the Before Canvas and After Canvas consistent with your chosen measurements.
  • Maintains structure and presentation with border height.
  • Provides numbering that matches your preferred method for following fold instructions.
